Fed Chair Warsh Cools October Rate-Hike Fears, and Crypto Breathes
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Fed Chair Warsh Cools October Rate-Hike Fears, and Crypto Breathes
  • Overview: Hot CPI (3.7%) and PPI (6.3% y/y) data briefly revived talk of a Fed hike, but Chair Kevin Warsh gave no hint of one — sending Polymarket hike odds down to 14% and helping Bitcoin ...

The macro story of the week ended with a sigh of relief. September consumer prices rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, a tenth hotter than the 3.6% consensus and up from August's 3.4%, while producer prices jumped 1.3% on the month for a 6.3% annual reading, the largest PPI gain since March 2022. That one-two punch briefly put an October rate hike back on the table, hammering risk assets and dragging Bitcoin under $80,000 on Thursday. Then Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking at an IMF event, gave no indication of further hikes, and the fear trade reversed almost immediately.

Markets moved fast on the pivot. Polymarket's October FOMC contract repriced to roughly 87% for no change and just 14% for a quarter-point hike at a late-Friday snapshot, with $44.7 million in total volume, while CME FedWatch showed a 12.7% hike probability against 87.3% for a hold. Asian stocks bounced 2% on the same news. Bitcoin, which had been crushed by the hot prints, steadied back above $81,000, and ether extended its rebound toward $2,476. The two-day policy meeting on October 27-28 is now expected to be a non-event, though the blackout period starting October 17 means no more official guidance until then.

The numbers behind the scare deserve a closer look because they explain why crypto remains glued to macro. Core CPI excluding food and energy rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% on the year, still meaningfully above the Fed's 2% target, and the economy has shown enough resilience that the Fed actually raised rates in September, its first hike in three years, lifting the target range to 3.75%-4.00% in a unanimous 12-0 vote. Markets have now removed rate cuts entirely from the near-term path, which is the real story: the debate is hike-versus-hold, not cut-versus-hold, a far more hostile backdrop for duration-sensitive risk assets than the market enjoyed earlier in the year.

This is where crypto's correlation problem bites. Bitcoin has shown heightened correlation with tech stocks since 2025, and this week proved it again: the SOX semiconductor index hit volatility levels matching the dot-com bubble, tech unraveled, and BTC plunged below $80,000 in lockstep before the Warsh remarks. Understanding how those odds get priced is essential because the rate-hike probability embedded in every crypto option contract effectively became the market's fear gauge this week. When hike odds spiked, leverage got flushed; when they fell, the dip got bought. The 10-year Treasury yield approaching 5.3%, a multi-decade high, remains the gravity field everything else orbits.

Not everyone is convinced the scare is over. New York Fed President John Williams had previously said another hike in 2026 was reasonable, and some desks view the Friday repricing as technical, noting the identical 13-point swing in opposite directions in the Polymarket Fed complex looked like a snapshot artifact rather than fresh news. The hot CPI and PPI prints have not gone away, and if October data prints hot again, the hike conversation returns with a vengeance at the December meeting. As one strategist frame puts it, the wise play is comparing pre-match preparation against live chaos: the meeting outcome may be priced, but the path of data into it is pure in-play volatility.

For crypto traders, the takeaway is practical. The Fed's October 27-28 decision now has a near-consensus hold priced in, which removes the biggest near-term macro overhang and gives Bitcoin and ether room to consolidate above their respective floors of $80,000 and $2,400. But the October options expiry cleared without fireworks, implied volatility is low, and the market is entering the blackout with inflation still running hot. The next genuine macro catalyst is the data itself, and in a market where a tenth of a point on CPI moves Bitcoin $2,000 in an hour, boring weekends are a feature, not a bug.
